How to buy underwear for women? A few home truths for the boys! By Felicity Spice.

Buying lingerie for your wife or girlfriend can be one of the most romantic gestures you could ever do, but it can be a daunting task.

I appreciate it maybe difficult to know where to start but lingerie should not be seen as gift-wrapping for a night of passion we generally want something more lasting than a one-night lingerie stand. And there is often a world of difference between what you like to imagine your wife or girlfriend wearing, and what we actually like wearing. When choosing lingerie gifts, my general guidance is to aim more for a classic look rather than something more likely to be worn by a dancer from the local lap dancing club.

Of course buying online removes lingerie-department panic, brought on by a proximity to too many frilly things. But to get lingerie shopping spot-on, you need to think a little more like your partner (as difficult as it might seem). So prize pretty over slutty, appreciate quality and be prepared to pay for it and always strike the right balance between sexy and slutty. Otherwise you will kill the romance dead before you've even started.

My Top 5 Lingerie Gift Tips

1. Getting the right size
If you are intimate enough with her to buy her lingerie, you should be intimate enough to have a quick peek in her lingerie drawer. Perhaps you can do a bit of detective work while she's in the shower: just make sure you have enough time to find something with a label. This is important as your wife or girlfriend will take this personally if you don't get this spot on!

2. What about colour?
Consider the contrast with her skin tone or hair colour or even match to the favourite colours in her wardrobe. Lighter tones will suit dark skin, whilst fair girls look great in darker shades. And if you are ever in doubt, black is a sexy confident colour and girly girls will always be pretty in pink.

3. What style as there is too much choice?
Don't know the difference between half cup, padded or plunge? This may require a little more thought, but in essence avoid skimpy and padded for big boobed girls and whilst plunge offers a lower neckline, it does give great cleavage for all sizes!

4. Thongs or Shorts?
Shorts are proving to be an increasingly popular choice as they create a sexy illusion of roundness regardless of size, but be careful with thongs as they are not always the choice of undies for big bottomed girls!

5. The price is right
You'll always pay for quality, and the lady in your life will clearly be able to tell the difference between cheap versus quality embroidered lace. The question is: are you looking for something cheap or are you really looking to really spoil her!
